Daily Question · an Innolab app
Privacy Policy
Who we are
Daily Question (the “app”) is provided by Innolab (“we”, “us”). We act as the data controller in respect of the limited information described below. Enquiries concerning privacy may be directed to [email protected].
Information stored on your device
The journal does not leave your device. The following categories of information are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to us:
- Child profiles: the name entered and the month and year of birth, used to select age-appropriate questions.
- Journal entries: recorded responses, the date, and the associated question.
- Voice notes: any audio recorded alongside an entry.
- App settings: language, reminder time, and a record of questions already presented.
We hold no server-side copy of this information and have no technical means of accessing it. Deleting the app deletes this information with it. Export and backup options are available within the app.
Optional iCloud backup
The app includes an iCloud backup setting, which is disabled unless you enable it. When enabled, journal data synchronises to your private iCloud database using Apple’s CloudKit. That data resides in your personal Apple account, subject to Apple’s privacy terms, and is not accessible to us, as a private CloudKit database is not visible to the app’s developer.
Your device’s standard iCloud or iTunes backup may also include app data, depending on your device settings. Such backups are controlled by you and Apple, and not by us.
Information we receive
We receive information only where you take a deliberate action:
a. Submissions for editorial content. Where you submit a question for editorial consideration, we receive the text submitted, your app language, the app version, and an anonymous installation identifier (described below). This information is used to identify recurring themes among users and to address those themes in editorial content. Submissions are not published and are not disclosed to other users; only consolidated themes are reflected in editorial content. You should not include information you do not wish us to receive, and should omit names and other identifying details.
b. Feedback. Where you submit feedback, we receive the text, the category selected, your app language, the app version, the installation identifier, and an email address only where you elect to provide one for the purpose of a reply.
c. Anonymous installation identifier. On first launch, the app generates a random identifier and stores it on the device. It is not derived from your name, your device’s hardware identifiers, or your Apple Account. It is attached to submissions, feedback, and subscription purchases so that submissions from a single installation may be grouped and a subscription verified without requiring you to create an account. It is reset if the app is deleted and reinstalled.
d. Content requests. Where the app requests content from our servers, those servers record the request together with standard technical information, including IP address and timestamp, in their logs, along with the Apple-signed receipt used to verify a subscription. Logs are retained for a limited period for security and troubleshooting purposes.
Subscriptions and payment
Subscriptions are purchased and managed through the Apple App Store. Payment is processed by Apple, and we do not receive your payment card details, billing address, or Apple Account. We receive a cryptographically signed receipt from Apple confirming the existence of an active subscription or free trial, which is verified before members-only content is served. Apple’s handling of your purchase is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Notifications and microphone
Reminders are scheduled locally on your device. Setting a reminder does not transmit any information to us.
Microphone access is requested only where you elect to record a voice note. The recording is stored in the on-device journal. It is not uploaded, transcribed, or analysed by us or any third party.
What we don’t do
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your information.
- We do not display advertising or share data with advertisers.
- We do not embed third-party analytics, attribution, or tracking software development kits.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and accordingly do not request App Tracking Transparency permission.
- We do not use submissions or journal content to train machine learning models.
Children’s information
The app is designed for and directed to parents and guardians, being adults. It is not intended for use by children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children.
Information relating to a child, including a name, recorded responses, and voice recordings, is stored on your device and is not transmitted to us. You retain control of that information at all times.
Where you make a submission for editorial consideration, the content of that submission is determined by you. We ask that you omit full names and any other identifying details.
Disclosure to others
We disclose information only to service providers engaged in the operation of the app, and only the limited categories of information described above. These include:
- Apple, in respect of App Store subscriptions and, where enabled by you, iCloud synchronisation;
- Hosting and infrastructure providers, which store submissions and feedback on servers under our control.
We may also disclose information where required by law, or where necessary to protect the safety of any person in circumstances where we believe there is a serious risk of harm.
Legal bases (UK/EU users)
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on: performance of a contract, in verifying a subscription in order to deliver the content purchased; consent, in respect of submissions, feedback, and voice recordings, each of which is undertaken at your election; and legitimate interests, in maintaining the security and proper operation of the Service and understanding user requirements.
Retention
We retain information only for so long as is necessary for the purposes described in this policy, or for such longer period as may be required by law, after which it is deleted or anonymised. Journal content is retained on your device until you delete it and remains under your control.
Your rights
Depending on your place of residence, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export the personal information we hold, to object to or restrict processing, and to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.
As we hold only limited information, most of these rights may be exercised by you directly: journal content is stored on your device and may be exported or deleted within the app at any time. In respect of information held by us, requests may be sent to [email protected]. As no account is maintained, please include the approximate date and wording of the relevant submission so that it may be located. We will respond within the period required by applicable law.
Security
Communications between the app and our servers are encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS. Access to the systems holding submissions and feedback is restricted to personnel who require it. No system is entirely secure; the principal protection afforded here is structural, in that journal content is not transmitted to us.
International transfers
We operate from Hong Kong SAR, and our service providers may store information in other jurisdictions. Where you use the app from another jurisdiction, the limited information described above may be transferred to and stored in those locations, subject to appropriate safeguards where required by law.
Changes to this policy
We may amend this policy from time to time. The date above will be updated accordingly, and in the case of material changes notice will be given in the app before they take effect.
